Introduction. 31:10 – The purpose was to demonstrate the fate of all those who refuse to make God as their true leader. The author is unknown. The key people are Elijah, Elisha, Shunammite, woman, Naaman, Jezebel, Jehu, Jehoash, Hezekiah, Isaiah, Manasseh, Josiah, Jehoiakim, Zedekiah, and Nebuchadnezzar.
Themes. 34:42 – There are three major theological themes. (i) Elisha. More of Elisha’s miracles are recorded any those of anyone else in the OT. The purpose of his mission was to restore respect for God and His message, and he stood firmly against the evil kings of Israel by faith courage and prayer he not only revealed God’s judgement of sin but also His mercy, love, and tenderness towards people too. Again, the main purpose of Elisha’s ministry was to restore respect for God and His message. (ii) Idolatry. Every evil king in both Israel and Judah encouraged idolatry. These false gods represented war, cruelty, power, and sex; and the people began to take on their characteristics. Although they had God’s law, priests, and prophets to guide them the evil kings sought priests and prophets whom they could control and manipulate to their own advantage. (iii) Evil Kings vs. Good Kings. The northern kingdom, Israel, had nine evil kings and no good ones. The southern kingdom, Judah, had twelve evil kings and eight good ones. Only twenty percent of the kings followed God. The evil kings were short sighted. They thought they could control their nation’s destiny by importing other religions with their idols; and forming alliances with heathen nations and enriching themselves. The good kings had to spend most of their time undoing the evil done by the evil kings.
